We Have A Sock

The weather is getting nice enough again that I am able to go and do some knitting in the car during my lunch break. There was mad knitting going on as I was determined to finish sock number one by that evening. Be careful of slippery needles. I was reminded several times that things can come close to going horribly wrong in the blink of an eye.

Yes, we have a sock!

I did get the dreaded ladder between my stitches. Luckily it is on the bottom of the sock. I am going to have to try another technique. I pulled my stitches tight but it didn't really work. Anybody got any tricks?

HOORAY FOR SOCKS!!!!

Since you're just knitting in the round, what if you tried staggering your needle changes. Like at the end of needle 1 knit one or two stitches from needle 2 (repeat as you go around) and then on row two knit until you have those 'extra' stitches left and then switch to a new needle. If you still get laddering it might not be as apparent.

Or just continue to always add two more to each needle as you go around. If laddering occurs it might look like part of a spiral pattern.

you're brave - DPNs in a bag! Yep, staggering is the way to lose the ladder - works for me. Cute sock - am amused you knit in the car during break - don't they have benches where you work? Thea

Excellent work on your first sock!

I sometimes get ladders on the bottom of my socks and because of that I check for it every few rounds. Tightening the stitches seems to work for me. I've heard that staggering works but I've also heard that with some people it just makes the ladder move in a spiral around your sock.

I am loving the Russian nesting doll bag! Where did you get that?!

Annie Modesitt told me this:

Don't pull tight on the first stitch of the new needle, pull on the SECOND stitch. It gives the same no ladder thing but without the precariousness of threatening to pull that first stitch off the new needle!

It looks like you've gotten lots of great ideas for the ladders. I love you've finished the first sock! Go you!

Wow! Great job; now for the other one!! Ha. I think as you get more comfortable, maybe you won't get ladders; I don't, at least I didn't the last time I used dpns. Anyway, love the colors. Go, Girl.

Wow, you are quick! I finished swatching for a sock, does that count? :D
One more tip on ladders: when you knit the first stitch on one needle, make sure the needle the stitch you just knitted is directly and closely behind the stitch you are knitting. I'll better lighter, shorter, less slipperly dpns would help too.

Very nice! My cure for laddering is to use the magic loop. I can pull the stitch tighter on the cable than I can on the needle. I can't seem to avoid them at all if I use DPNs.

Hey Kel,
Bring the sock in - I think that I can help (or you know me - I will at least spend time trying - and it keeps me from labeling and we all know how much I LOVE labeling).

Like someone else mentioned, I pull the second stitch really tight and I really don't get ladders. (could never remember to do that stagger thing) Also, washing and blocking will often get rid of that little bit of ladder.
Super cute little sock bag!!

Awesome sock!

This is how I avoid ladders: if the first stitch is a knit stitch I put my new/free dpn under the needle I last knit onto - the to the right. Knit that first stitch and then knit the second stitch tighten it up. If the first stitch is a purl stitch I place my new/free dpn on top of the last needle worked and then on with the tightening of the second stitch. hth!

LOVE the sock. What yarn is that? Excellent job.... And, just my height as well. I don't like tall socks at all. Do you have the pattern for that one?

I miss you!

Congrats on the socks! You did great! As for the ladder, the only trick I know is to remember to snug up each time, but I use circular needles where the cable is a bit smaller than the needle, so the snugging up really works well. Keep up the sock knitting, we may have a new sock addictee. :-)
